This is one of the strongest free weekends of the NYC fall. If you are looking for free things to do in NYC this weekend, September 26–27, 2026 covers a sunrise-to-sunset festival on the Brooklyn waterfront, a major Central Park concert, two of the city's biggest annual street and literary festivals, a free Oscar-winning movie screening in Chelsea, and live Afro-Latin music in a Gramercy park.

Every pick below was checked against the organizer, venue or official event page before publication. Admission to all nine is free, but food, drinks and shopping are not — and two of them have access rules worth reading before you go: Global Citizen Festival tickets must be earned through the Global Citizen app, and the SVA screening is first come, first served.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26

1. Daybreaker ALIVE Festival

Time: 6:00 AM–8:00 PM
Location: Brooklyn Bridge Park – Pier 3, Brooklyn
Admission: FREE — RSVP encouraged but not required; entry is first come, first served unless you hold guaranteed access
Event page: Daybreaker ALIVE Festival — details on 7Days7Nights
Official link: Daybreaker ALIVE NYC · Brooklyn Bridge Park listing

Daybreaker's first sunrise-to-sunset sober festival in the U.S. takes over Pier 3 for 14 hours on the East River. Instead of back-to-back sets, the day is built as one guided arc: morning movement and dance, live music, sound baths, breathwork, guided walks and runs, improv, interactive art, circus performances, sauna and cold plunge, and kids' programming under Daybreaker's all-ages INTERGEN banner.

Organizers expect 3,000-plus people and the event is alcohol-free, so the energy comes from dancing and community rather than a bar. Bring layers for a chilly 6 AM start, a blanket or low chair for the lawn, and a yoga mat if you want a movement session. A food village runs all day and outside snacks are welcome. Easiest routes: York St F, High St A/C, or the NYC Ferry to DUMBO.

2. Homecoming: For the Harbor

Time: 10:30 AM–3:30 PM (parade steps off at 1 PM)
Location: LMCC's Arts Center at Governors Island, 110 Andes Road
Admission: FREE and open to all ages — organizers ask you to RSVP
Event page: Homecoming: For the Harbor — details on 7Days7Nights
Official link: LMCC event page

Climate Week NYC 2026 ends with a pep rally for New York Harbor. LMCC, The New York Climate Exchange and Stony Brook University open with a climate-action tailgate fair of environmental groups and hands-on activities, then send a people's parade down the island at 1 PM with the 50-plus member Grand Street Campus Marching Band, cheerleaders, costumed New Yorkers and Stony Brook's mascot. A "postgame" party with food closes the afternoon outside the Arts Center.

It is the latest public art project by artist Amanda Lovelee, who uses parades and pom-poms to make climate action feel collective instead of grim. Come dressed in your best New York Harbor costume, and check the ferry schedule both ways.

3. KPop Demon Hunters Free Screening + Q&A

Time: 2:00–5:00 PM (doors about 30 minutes early)
Location: SVA Theatre, 333 West 23rd Street, Chelsea
Admission: FREE — first come, first served; Eventbrite RSVPs are appreciated but do not guarantee a seat
Event page: KPop Demon Hunters Free Screening + Q&A — details on 7Days7Nights
Official link: SVA Theatre: After School Special 2026 · RSVP

SVA Theatre screens Netflix's Oscar-winning KPop Demon Hunters for free, followed by a Q&A with production designer Dave Bleich, moderated by SVA student Matt Leung. The feature is preceded by the NYC premiere of the animated short First Haircut by Disney·Pixar artist Ivo Kos.

It is part of After School Special, SVA's alumni film and animation festival running September 23–27. The film is rated PG and children under 3 are not admitted. Arrive early — seating is not reserved and this is the festival's biggest draw.

4. STORYfest with Reese's Book Club

Time: 2:00–5:00 PM (programming from about 2:15 PM)
Location: Hudson Yards Public Square & Gardens
Admission: FREE — seating is limited and first come, first served; free RSVP available
Event page: STORYfest with Reese's Book Club — details on 7Days7Nights
Official link: Hudson Yards event page · RSVP

Reese's Book Club closes its STORYfest season outdoors at Hudson Yards with a book-to-screen theme. Danielle Robay, host of the Bookmarked podcast, talks with Alice Hoffman (Practical Magic) and Carola Lovering (Tell Me Lies), with an audience Q&A at 3 PM and signings from 3:15 PM.

Expect giveaways, author meet-and-greets and activations from Target and Yankee Candle. The conversation is visible across the plaza, so bring a blanket or folding chair if the seats fill.

5. The Afro-Latineers in Stuyvesant Square Park

Time: 2:00–4:00 PM
Location: Stuyvesant Square Park (West Park), Rutherford Place, Gramercy
Admission: FREE, no ticket required
Event page: The Afro-Latineers in Stuyvesant Square Park — details on 7Days7Nights
Official link: Stuyvesant Park Neighborhood Association

A free Hispanic Heritage Month set from The Afro-Latineers, the multicultural ensemble led by percussionist Paul "Sabor" Rivera, playing Afrobeat, salsa, Latin jazz and jazz standards under the trees in one of Manhattan's prettiest small parks.

This is the low-effort pick of the weekend: no line, no ticket, bring a blanket and stay for a set or two before dinner in Gramercy or the East Village.

6. Global Citizen Festival 2026

Time: Gates 2 PM, music 4 PM, no entry after 8 PM, ends around 10 PM
Location: Great Lawn, Central Park
Admission: Tickets are FREE but must be EARNED — not walk-up. Complete an action journey in the Global Citizen app to earn points, then either enter the free ticket lottery or claim a code and make a $25 charitable donation per ticket to secure one instantly while the limited allocation lasts. Paid General Admission and VIP tickets are sold separately.
Event page: Global Citizen Festival 2026 — details on 7Days7Nights
Official link: Global Citizen Festival NYC 2026

The Great Lawn's biggest music day of the year returns for its 14th edition. Ms. Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean mark the 30th anniversary of the Fugees' The Score, alongside Lenny Kravitz, John Legend, Lainey Wilson, Shaboozey and TOMORROW X TOGETHER, with Hugh Jackman hosting and appearances from Rachel Brosnahan and Gayle King.

Read the rules before you plan the day: it is standing-room only, rain or shine, with no re-entry and a strict small-clear-bag policy. Download your ticket to your phone's wallet in advance, because cell service on the Great Lawn is unreliable.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27

7. Brooklyn Book Festival: Festival Day

Time: 10:00 AM–6:00 PM
Location: Brooklyn Borough Hall, Columbus Park and Downtown Brooklyn venues
Admission: FREE, no ticket required
Event page: Brooklyn Book Festival: Festival Day — details on 7Days7Nights
Official link: Brooklyn Book Festival: Festival Day

The festival's flagship free day fills eight indoor and outdoor stages around Borough Hall — Brooklyn Law School, the Center for Brooklyn History, St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church, Columbus Park and Korean War Veterans Plaza — with back-to-back author conversations, plus the Literary Marketplace's publisher and indie bookstore tents in the plaza between them.

The 2026 lineup includes Marlon James, Joyce Carol Oates, Namwali Serpell, Douglas Stuart and Pulitzer winners Colson Whitehead, Tracy K. Smith, Quiara Alegría Hudes, Cristina Rivera Garza and Julia Angwin. Headline panels fill early, so get to a stage well before a session you care about. (Children's Day runs Saturday, September 26, at Borough Hall and Plaza.)

8. Atlantic Antic 2026

Time: 12:00–6:00 PM, rain or shine
Location: Atlantic Avenue from Hicks Street to Fourth Avenue, Brooklyn
Admission: FREE — food, drink and shopping are not
Event page: Atlantic Antic 2026 — details on 7Days7Nights
Official link: Atlantic Antic / Atlantic Avenue LDC

Brooklyn's biggest and oldest street festival returns for its 51st year across roughly 10 blocks of Atlantic Avenue: live music on multiple stages, more than 80 food vendors, 130-plus local merchants and craft sellers, vintage finds and handmade goods.

Families get three dedicated kids' areas — Mommy Poppins' free Kid Fest at Henry Street, PLAYTOPIA at Boerum Place, and the classic Kids Zone with bounce houses, pony rides and face painting. The "Antic Sing!" competition hits the community stage at Third Avenue from 2 to 2:45 PM with cash prizes. Take the 2/3 to Hoyt Street, the A/C/G to Hoyt-Schermerhorn, or any train to Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center.

9. Ethical Culture Street Fair 2026

Time: 12:00–6:00 PM
Location: West 64th Street between Broadway and Central Park West, Upper West Side
Admission: FREE
Event page: Ethical Culture Street Fair 2026 — details on 7Days7Nights
Official link: New York Society for Ethical Culture

The New York Society for Ethical Culture fills its Lincoln Center-adjacent block with community organizations, local vendors, international food and children's activities, with performances both on the street and inside its landmark meeting house.

The published schedule runs from the Fortune Society Singers at 12:30 and "Sean the Cellist" Grissom at Broadway from 1 to 2:30, through Jody Sperling & Time Lapse Dance at 1:30, Afro-Brazilian drumming with Mambembé at 2:30, a choir set at 3:15 and jazz from Music on the Inside at 4. An easy add-on to a Central Park afternoon.
