Your Free Weekend in NYC — August 7–9, 2026
Looking for free things to do in New York City this weekend? Early August is peak free-programming season: HARLEM WEEK takes over Upper Manhattan, dragon boats race across Meadow Lake in Queens, outdoor movies light up parks in all five boroughs, and the waterfront hands out free kayak sessions and ferry rides.
Every one of the twelve picks below is free to attend and verified as running Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9, 2026. Where admission is free but food, drinks, ferries or optional extras cost money, we say so.

Planning Tips
- Stack by geography. Saturday in Flushing Meadows covers both the Dragon Boat Festival and the Queens Night Market — the 7 train drops you between them.
- Ferry math for Governors Island. Boarding before 11:30 AM on Saturday or Sunday is free; after that you pay. Reserve the return slot when you book.
- Kayaking is early or never. Free boathouse sessions cap out by early afternoon on hot weekends. Aim for the 10:00 AM opening.
- Bring cash for markets. Most vendors take cards, but cash lines move faster at HARLEM WEEK and the night markets.
- Check the weather. Kayaking, outdoor movies and waterfront concerts are the first things canceled by storms — confirm on the organizer's social channels the morning of.
- Movies fill up. For Movies Under the Stars, arrive 45 minutes before dusk for a flat, screen-facing spot.

FAQ
Are all of these events really free?
Yes — every event on this list is free to attend. Where food, drinks, ferry fares or optional extras cost money, we have flagged it in the listing.
Do I need tickets or registration for anything?
Most events are walk-up. Governors Island ferries should be reserved online for summer weekends, Bryant Park offers optional free picnic-table reservations, and a handful of HARLEM WEEK indoor sessions ask for a free RSVP.
What if it rains on August 7–9, 2026?
Free kayaking, outdoor movies and waterfront concerts cancel in bad weather. The Bronx Museum, HARLEM WEEK indoor programming and the covered market areas are the reliable rain plans.
Is this weekend good for kids?
Very. The Dragon Boat Festival, Big City Fishing, Movies Under the Stars, Governors Island and Summer on the Hudson are all family-friendly and stroller-accessible.
How do I get around between events?
Subway plus a short walk covers everything here. Flushing Meadows is on the 7, Governors Island ferries leave from Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge Park, and Riverside Park is a straight shot on the 1.
