For a month each autumn the New York Botanical Garden gives its 250 acres over to Día de los Muertos, the Mexican tradition of remembering the dead with flowers, food, music and colour rather than mourning. In 2026 the celebration runs from October 3 through November 2 and is included with Garden admission, which makes it one of the best-value seasonal outings in the city. Expect marigolds — the flower that guides spirits home — used at scale, ofrendas built as installations, and a programme of music, dance and family workshops layered across the Garden's conservatory, gardens and lawns. The Bronx setting matters: this is a real botanical garden in peak autumn, so you get fall colour on the tree collections and long walking paths alongside the celebration itself. Give yourself half a day. Metro-North's Harlem Line stops at Botanical Garden station, directly opposite the entrance, and the Bx26 and B, D, 4 trains put you within walking distance.
