El Califa de León

Flatiron, Manhattan

The first U.S. outpost of the famous Mexico City taqueria, serving four beef tacos on hand-pressed corn tortillas in Flatiron.

El Califa de León is a taqueria that made its name by refusing to do very much. The original, on Avenida Ribera de San Cosme in Mexico City, has been open since the late 1960s and serves four tacos — gaonera, costilla, bistec, chuleta — and nothing else. In 2024 it became the first taqueria in the world to receive a Michelin star, and the Mexico City restaurant was recognised again in 2025. That distinction belongs to the Mexico City original; treat the New York opening on its own terms until the current Michelin Guide says otherwise.

The Flatiron location at 20 West 23rd Street is the group's first restaurant outside Mexico and its first expansion in nearly seven decades. The menu is the same short list. The gaonera is the one to order first: thin beef cooked hard and fast, laid on a tortilla pressed from fresh maize minutes earlier, finished with salsa and lime and nothing that gets in the way. There is no cheese fallback, no burrito, no queso — the point is beef, corn, salt and heat, made properly.

What is different in New York is the setting. The Mexico City original is a standing counter with a couple of feet of griddle; the Flatiron space is a bigger room with actual seating, which makes it a rare thing in this part of Manhattan: a genuinely famous restaurant you can walk into for lunch without a reservation strategy. Salsas are hot and worth respecting. Order two or three tacos, add one more, drink something cold, leave.

It is also the most useful of the new openings for everyday eating — casual, quick, affordable next to a chophouse or a steak tavern, open every day from 11am to 11pm, and a five-minute walk from Madison Square Park, the Flatiron Building and the Eataly block. Good for a solo lunch, a pre-dinner stop, or a group that cannot agree on anything else.

About This Place

The story behind El Califa de León.

20 West 23rd Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in Flatiron. Nearest subway: 23 St (F, M, N, R, W, 6) — all within two blocks. Open Monday–Sunday, 11am–11pm, per the restaurant's own site. Walk-in taqueria: order at the counter, eat in the dining room. Four tacos on the menu — gaonera, costilla, bistec and chuleta — plus salsas. Tortillas are pressed from fresh maize in-house. On Michelin: the original Mexico City taqueria was awarded a Michelin star in 2024 and recognised again in 2025. We are not claiming a star for the New York restaurant.

Why We Love It

Four tacos, no decoration, no compromise — and a fresh-maize tortilla that explains why people queued for this in Mexico City for decades.
