ARTECHOUSE NYC: Twilight Zone

Twilight Zone: Hidden Wonders of the Ocean is the exhibition ARTECHOUSE Studio built with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and it opens to the public on September 19, 2026 in the century-old boiler room beneath Chelsea Market. The ocean twilight zone is the band of water roughly 200 to 1,000 metres down — dark, largely unmapped, and home to the nightly migration of animals that rise toward the surface after sunset and sink again before dawn. ARTECHOUSE turns that migration into a floor-to-ceiling projection environment, so the room you are standing in behaves like water: currents move across the walls, jellyfish drift past at eye level, and the floor ripples underfoot when you walk through it.

The centrepiece is a 24-minute cinematic sequence with an original score by Mehmet Ünal of Tilde Sound Art, played through the venue's Hyperreal Sound system. Around it sit seven interactive installations and six XR activations that give the science somewhere to land: you can pilot the route of the Mesobot, the underwater robot WHOI uses to follow individual animals without startling them, in a journey inspired by the illustrated book "Where the Weird Things Are"; run an eDNA analysis to see how much life a single sample of deep water can reveal; and draw a creature that then joins the projected ecosystem. The Auxiliary Gallery closes the loop with why the twilight zone matters — it stores carbon, cools the climate, and feeds the fisheries most of the world eats from.

What makes this different from the immersive-room boom generally is that the source material is real research rather than a public-domain painting. The visuals are built from expedition imagery and data, and the science partner is credited throughout. Allow 60 to 75 minutes; the film loops, so you can watch it twice, and most people do.
