New York Road Runners sends the Midnight Run off at 11:59 PM on December 31, so the four-mile race starts as the year turns and fireworks go up over Central Park. There is a costume parade and a dance party beforehand, and the crowd is a mix of serious club runners and people who signed up on a dare. Registration is handled by NYRR with member and non-member pricing; spectators can watch the fireworks from the park for free. Dress for winter — the start line at midnight in Manhattan is cold, whatever the costume.
